Portland, OR- Model for a Sustainable City- Part 1
In 2006 the city of Portland, OR was rated the most sustainable city in the US based on several factors including land use and green building, air quality and energy policy. After living and travelling through many cities you can really see how the green culture, attitude and awareness are more prevalent than anywhere else. The habits and lifestyles of Portlander’s as well as the structure and policy of the city are often said to be a model for other cities. In my next several posts I would like to write about one aspect of Portland’s committment toward sustainability and explore how other people, cities and cultures could use these ideas as models and apply them to their own lifestyles. Some topics include sidewalk gardens, bicycle culture, green building and recycling. Much of Portland’s committment to sustainability comes from Europe’s influence, so why not explore all realms and try to be a little greener. Check back soon for Part 2.
